I left Gramps’ house and continued my run down Brandt Avenue. After I reached County Road 35, I turned left. As I approached Whitetail Lake, I saw a late-model Mercedes sitting on the shoulder with what looked like a lone occupant in the driver’s seat. When I got closer, a man got out and hung his arm on the open door.

It was David Fryor. “I thought that was you, Sergeant. You’re an early morning exerciser, I see.”

“Sometimes, at least. I’ve got to work it in when I can.” I pointed at his car. “Nice ride you’ve got.”

“It’s a rental I picked up at the airport. But it’s what I drive at home, and I find it easier knowing where everything is,” he said.

“I get that. Are you here thinking about your brother?” I said.

He nodded. “I watched the clip on YouTube of Toby’s Charger getting pulled out. A buddy told me about it. I’ve just been sitting here, thinking about the circumstances. If someone had seen the car go into the lake back then, the last thirty-some years would have been very different for our family. My parents probably would have stayed together. And the sheriff’s department might have had a chance to solve the murders.”

“David, it’s true that solving the crime after this much time is a long shot. But we’re working on it, and something may pop.”

He thought a moment and nodded. “How’s your mother doing?”

“Better. Actually, she said she woke up this morning feeling more at peace. I hope the sheriff turns up soon so we can all feel that way.”

David smiled. “I hope so.”

“And what about your dad?” I said.

“He’s putting up a brave front. Wade, my other brother, has been trying to decide if he should try to make the trip home or not. He broke his ankle a while ago, and it’s been giving him problems. He had trouble navigating at the airports when he came back for our mother’s funeral. But he talks to Dad a few times a day and offers support from afar,” he said.

I smiled. “Well, I better get moving.”

“Have a good run.”

I fell back into my jogging pace, and was about half a mile from Smoke’s driveway when the man himself pulled over and parked. He rolled down his window, and I halted my run once again.

“You’re full of energy this morning, little lady,” he said.

“It helps that I slept like a rock. And so you know, Dana Smyth remembered Rudy’s friend’s name. Sheldon, but he went by Shelly. Dana called me last night when she thought of it.”

“Sheldon, but no last name to go with it?”

“No last name. Maybe Harry Gimler knows.”

“You’re being optimistic.”

“Hopeful. I’m planning to pay him another visit this morning. He may come through with something one of these days.”

“Eternally optimistic.”

“Ha. I just had a chat with David Fryor. He’s sitting by Whitetail Lake, in a Mercedes.”

“Well, I may have to stop by, see how he’s doing.”

“I’m sure he’d appreciate it.”

“Back in high school, he was a nice kid and a fine athlete in his own right.
